 Dear Parents and Students of Irrigon Elementary School,

I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful summer. As we approach the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to each of you. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the new principal of Irrigon Elementary School, and I am eagerly looking forward to meeting our families of IES and working together. 

My name is Karen Frenette and for the past four years, I have been serving in the Hermiston School District as a Dean of Students and before that as Reading Specialist. Prior to my time in Hermiston, my experience includes being a Reading Specialist in the Gaston School District, and a classroom teacher in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Through these experiences I bring a comprehensive understanding of the diverse needs of students and the importance of creating a supportive school community.

In addition to focusing on academic excellence, I am also looking forward to becoming an active member of the Irrigon community. I believe that strong partnerships between school and home are essential for student success, and I anticipate ongoing collaboration with our IES families.

As we begin this school year, I am excited to announce a few staffing changes in our building. Ms. Hodgdon will be returning to our 4th grade team!  Ms. Hodgdon was at A.C. Houghton this past year teaching 3rd grade.  Mrs. Bulow (5th grade teacher last year), will be our new Special Education teacher this year. We are also welcoming two new staff members to our building as well! Mrs. Olney has worked in our building as an assistant, but will be in a new role teaching in the classroom with our 6th grade team! Ms. Lauer is coming to us from the west side of Oregon, as our new ELD teacher! We are excited for the new faces and new year ahead!

When does school start? It starts on Monday, August 26th! School will begin at 8:00 am. and dismissal will be at 3:30 p.m. The school doors will be unlocked at 7:45 a.m. Please note that this will be strictly enforced again this year, students are not to be on campus before 7:45 a.m. as we do not have staff available for supervision until then. Students will enter the building using classroom exterior doors. Students will be considered tardy at 8:05 a.m.

 Student Registration: IES will hold student registration Monday, August 12th and Tuesday, August 13th, from 8:00am - 4:00pm. Registration will also be available to parents online through the parent portal which is located on Irrigon Elementary’s website or the Morrow County School District website. This registration process can be completed from home or by coming to our school during the above date. If you do not have your login information, please contact the school at 541-922-2421.

 Open House: Thursday, August 22nd from 4:00p.m.- 6:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing our students and parents attend this event.

 Bus Routes: Mid-Columbia will be available at Open House on Thursday, August 22nd from 4:00p.m. – 6:00 p.m. to answer questions about routes.

 Meals: Our school will be participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) during the 2024-25 school year. What that means is there will be NO CHARGE for enrolled IES students who receive a healthy breakfast and/or lunch from the school. Parents will not need to fill out or submit a free or reduced application for your child/children who attend IES.

 School Pictures: Information will be coming home at a later date.

 Student Body Fee: A $5.00 fee for each student is collected at Open House or the first day of school. This helps offset the cost for extra-curricular activities, including reward activities, field trips, and outdoor school. 

 We want to reach out to all parents and thank you for supporting IES staff and your child with positive words of encouragement. We are excited to start the 2024-25 school year adventure with our upcoming fourth graders, our returning students, and new students who have recently moved to our community. 

Thank you to Mr. Kernal and Mr. Thompson, our custodians, who have worked diligently over the summer making IES ready for students and staff to have a beautiful and clean place to grow and learn.

Mi nombre es Karen Frenette y durante los últimos cuatro años he trabajado en el Distrito Escolar de Hermiston como Decana de Estudiantes y, antes de eso, como Especialista en Lectura. Antes de mi tiempo en Hermiston, mi experiencia incluye haber sido Especialista en Lectura en el Distrito Escolar de Gaston y maestra de aula en los grados 4º, 5º y 6º.   Welcome back to a wonderful school year! We are diligently working behind the scenes to make this upcoming school year as normal as possible for our students. I will be starting my 12th year in education at Morrow County School District and I look forward to many more in the future. Irrigon is an amazing community to be part of and I appreciate you all for sharing your children with our staff every day.

 When you begin school this year you will see two new faces down the 5th grade hallway. The first new face that will be joining us as a 5th grade teacher will be Mr. Kevin Hamblin. Mr. Hamblin’s last assignment was teaching 6th grade at Windy River Elementary. Prior to that he taught 5th grade for fourteen years and 4th grade for one year. He has completed 16 years of teaching. He will bring a lot of experience and excitement to IES. Next, we have Mrs. Jackie Bulow joining us as a 5th grade teacher. Jackie was raised in Irrigon and attended IES as a student. Jackie will be a great addition to IES and our community.

 School starts on Monday, August 30th. We will do everything needed to keep our students safe through social distancing and hand washing. We will follow new mask mandate guidance from ODE as it comes out to our district. We are excited to start the 2021-22 school year adventure with our upcoming fourth graders, our returning students, and new students who have recently moved to our community.  ¡Bienvenidos de nuevo a un maravilloso año escolar! Estamos trabajando diligentemente detrás de escena para hacer que este próximo año escolar sea lo más normal posible para nuestros estudiantes. Comenzaré mi doceavo año en educación en Morrow County School District y espero muchos más en el futuro. Irrigon es una comunidad increíble de la cual ser parte y les agradezco a todos por compartir a sus hijos con nuestro personal todos los días.
